Beau Fortier starred in most of my cringe-worthy teenage fantasies.
I met him when I was a junior in high school, a time that revolved exclusively around bad hair, failed forays into flirting, and scientific inquiries into which brand of toilet paper worked best for stuffing bras.
That is, until Beau moved into the small guest house just beyond my bedroom window.
A 24-year-old law student at Tulane, Beau was as mysterious to me as second base (both in baseball and in the bedroom). He was older. Intimidating. Hot. Boys my age had chicken legs and chubby cheeks. Beau had calloused hands and a jaw cut from steel. Our interactions were scarce—mostly involving slight stalking on my end—and yet deep down, I desperately hoped he saw me as more of a potential lover than a lovesick loser.
Turns out, I was fooling myself. My fragile ego learned that lesson the hard way.
Now, ten years later, we’re both back in New Orleans, and guess who suddenly can’t take his eyes off little ol’ me.
My old friend, Mr. Fortier.
But things have changed. I’m older now—poised and confident. My ego wears a bulletproof vest. The butterflies that once filled my stomach have all perished.
When I was a teenager, Beau warned me to guard my heart.
Let’s hope he knows how to guard his.

REVIEW

News Flash: I’m a big fan of RS Grey. When I became a blogger a little over a year ago, I had no idea that I was going to be able to review books by major authors like herself. I was blown away when I received an ARC of Anything You Can Do. I was officially hooked. So whenever her books come out, I just dive right in, no preamble required.

One of the reasons I love anticipating Rachel’s books is because the covers are some of my favorites! I love the color schemes and how they all just go together. They look fantastic on my shelves, therefore I love to collect them. The other is because if you follow her on social media, she really talks a lot about her current WIP, which is really fun. I really enjoyed seeing her in New Orleans doing “research” for The Beau and The Belle.

So like I said, I don’t usually read her blurbs. I don’t like to ‘spoil’ myself before reading her books. So I was delighted to realize that not only was this a forbidden love(for now) but it also had a second change romance twist. Oh, and it’s set in New Orleans. It just screamed COME READ ME BITCH!

So in case you’re like me and don’t read blurbs, but read reviews instead, here’s the jest: Lauren is a 17 year old southern belle. Beau is a 24 year old law student that’s trying to dig out his family’s name from NOLA’s past and bring it back to the present. Lauren is head over heel’s for the sexy resident that is renting the quarters out back her parent’s home. Beau is very aware that their relationship could never be. She’s 17. But that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t take notice of how beautiful Lauren is. But just as Lauren makes clear of her feelings for Beau something happens that separates them for the next 10 years.

This is the part that I squeal to myself, because I love a good second chance romance! One of the things that I love most about Beau is his determination. I love that he wants to ‘rebrand’ the Fortier name. I really loved the whole idea of how Rachel created his character. She also did a fantastic job describing and bringing the magic that somehow lives is NOLA to paper.

So now I’m going to get real. This just didn’t work for me. *palm meets face* I’m chalking this up to “it’s not you, it’s me” kind of situation. I mean, all the elements were there, so why didn’t this work for me? Well people, that’s the question that I just can’t answer. Because I just don’t know. I just needed more…..something?…more, sustenance? I really didn’t start getting into their story until 60% but then by the time I hit 75% I was just tired of their fickleness. I wanted meat and potatoes people! And I felt like I was being fed grain.

I didn’t take this review lightly. I’ve read and reviewed 8 books by Rachel, and gave none of them less than 4 stars. I would gladly re-read any of them. That’s why it pains me to write about a book by one of my favorite authors and just…not….love it. There’s always one in the bunch. And what didn’t work for me, might work for you! That’s what’s great about literature. There’s something for everyone’s taste. Here’s the best part: Rachel is a fantastic writer, so you don’t have to worry about the structure of her books or plot lines not holding up to snuff. I hope that if this book interests you, that you go for it!

About R.S. Grey

I am a lover of books, chocolate, reality TV, black labs, and cold weather. Seriously, if I had it my way I would be curled up on the couch with all of those things… everyday.

I live in Texas where I spend my free time writing and reading. My favorite authors are Mindy Kaling & Jonathan Safran Foer. I’m a comedy geek and love all things “funny”. Women like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Mindy Kaling are definitely the biggest inspirations for my writing, though I think my work tends to skew a bit smuttier than theirs.
