All animals bite when they’re provoked
It’s needless to say that Hideaway is most reader’s #1 most anticipated release of 2017. Corrupt is still an all-time favorite novel of mine, and is comparable to absolutely nothing else that I have ever read. So once it was announced that Kai’s story was next, I couldn’t wait to see what Pen could come up with.
I love that I could open this book up and already feel my peripheral vision start to darken. I love the tone that Pen sets, it’s creepy, it literally puts pressure on your chest, making it hard to breath.
Kai. Although he was a big portion of Corrupt, we still didn’t know much about him. We learn in Hideaway that Kai definitely has a dark side. He’s controlled, mysterious, full of self-loathing, and like a caged animal, on the brink of attack. But what I love most about Kai is that he has honor, pride, loyalty, and a big heart. That’s a hard combination to pull off but Pen does him justice. His softness with Banks was my weakness because it sets him apart from the rest of the Horseman.
BANKS!!! Holy freaking crap, I love this character! She is Pen’s #1 BEST heroine to date! She is, to put it simply: BADASS! This girl is extremely hardened by her past. She is tremendously loyal to the Torrance family, despite their reputation, and unveiling the reasoning for that is fantastic. But despite the fact that she’s a fighter, she is incredibly innocent and vulnerable. The combination of these characters is incredibly sexy and addicting.
Damon. Yes, DAMON, you guys! Damon plays a HUGE roll in this book, both in the past and the present. I FUCKING LOVED IT! Honestly, he’s my favorite character in Hideaway. Before the release I kept asking myself how Pen was going to pull off his book and after finishing this I can’t help but crave Kill Switch even more. I don’t think that anyone will disagree with me, but Damon definitely over shadows Kai in this book, but he would overshadow any other hero because he is just that intriguing!
Back to Banks and Kai. Their relationship is a big push/pull. They have a past that binds them. How they met and the sequence of events of that night is super sexy and I love that they both felt freedom in their anonymity. But Banks doesn’t give him much about her past. Kai needed more than what she was willing to give him.
“When we’re young, we are who we are out of necessity—we are who we’re taught to be. With freedom, though, comes the liberty to broaden our horizons. When we only have ourselves to answer to,” I said and glanced at her again. “You haven’t gotten that freedom yet, have you? Why?”
Unveiling Banks’ past is enthralling. Not only in how she had to scrap through life, but her relationship with Damon is highly addictive! I loved their dynamic, how it pushed the limits of making me feel uncomfortable, but also make me want to mourn for Damon.
This book feels like a race, or shall I say a marathon. With this being such a large book, there are spaces in there that are a little slow. You’ll want answers long before they are given and there will be questions that will go unanswered, but that’s ok, because that means Kill Switch is going to unbelievable!!!!! To put it plainly, this book is a big set up for Kill Switch.
I will admit, this is not my favorite book by Pen. But at the same time I feel like this is a sacrifice that had to be paid for Kill Switch. I am losing my ever loving mind just thinking about what a crazy ride that book is going to be!

DEVIL’S NIGHT is returning! Hiding places, chases, and all the games are back…
Buried in the shadows of the city, there’s a hotel called The Pope. Ailing, empty, and dark—it sits abandoned and surrounded by a forgotten mystery.
But you think it’s true, don’t you, Kai Mori? The story about the hidden twelfth floor. The mystery of the dark guest who never checked in and never checks out. You think I can help you find that secret hideaway and get to him, don’t you?
You and your friends can try to scare me. You can try to push me. Because even though I struggle to hide everything I feel when you look at me—and have ever since I was a girl—I think that maybe what you seek is so much closer than you’ll ever realize.
I will never betray him.
So sit tight.
On Devil’s Night, the hunt will be coming to you.
You have no idea what I seek, Little One. You don’t know what I had to become to survive three years in prison for a crime I would gladly commit again.
No one can know what I’ve turned into.
I want that hotel, I want to find him, and I want this over.
I want my life back.
But the more I’m around you, the more I realize this new me is exactly who I was meant to be.
So come on, kid. Don’t chicken out. My house is on the hill. So many ways in, and good luck finding your way out.
I’ve seen your hideaway. Time to see mine.
