My father owes a debt.
I am his currency.
I’m supposed to marry the recently crowned mafia king of the Foley family as repayment for my father’s transgressions. I don’t understand why the Foleys would want me, but I’ve grown up in a crime family, and I know the ugly consequences of not doing what you’re told.
But as the wedding date approaches, the deal changes, and I’m about to be wed to a man I know nothing about. In fact, I don’t even know his last name.Instead of becoming a mafia princess, I’m marrying the henchman.
After one look at him, I’m not sure I’ll survive the wedding night.

Deklan by Shay Savage is a departure from what I’m used to when it comes to Shay. And let me tell you, she set the bar extremely high with books such as Suriving Raine, Bastian’s Storm and the entire Evan Arden series, not to mention Transcendence which will go down as one of my favorite romance novels ever. I will shamelessly admit to being a Shay Savage superfan who also loved Offside (and considers it a criminally underrated YA romance). Win Some or Lose Some, a touching and brilliant take on autism was a highlight of 2016 for me. And so on and so forth. Basically, Shay has proven her worth as writer over and over again.
I think her main strength comes from her uncanny ability to portray the male POV, which is sadly missing here, as we get Kera’s POV and we are forced to live the story in her shoes and see things through her eyes. Which isn’t a dig. Shay is a great writer that knows how to tell a cohesive, well put romance in any POV. Her male gaze is just my personal preference.
This book just isn’t as fantastic as some of the other stuff she’s written. She’s been known to write with an edge, her stories are extremely different to the norm. This book is more of a standard romance between an unexperienced, virginal heroine and a gentle henchman, who is loving and devoted and who is forced to marry the heroine because his boss demands it. And who is his boss? A dangerous, psychotic Mafia kingpin. Deklan is completely indebted, so he cannot refuse. Kera has known for years that this is her destiny, except she assumed she’d be the mafia princess, not get married to the henchman.
This book is the typical virginal fantasy that involves marrying a dangerous, powerful man both sweet and protecting towards you, but deadly to others. If you want to get caught up in that type of tale, by all means I highly recommend this book. Kera may be a bit exasperating in parts, but I always chalked that up to her naiveté, so that didn’t bother me much. She’s only 19 after all. Deklan was the strong, protective type, extremely Catholic with a strong religious belief system, so he was an interesting dichotomy of black and white.
Shoutout to our man Evan Arden… I don’t want to say more for fear of spoiling things, but let’s just say, if you’re an Evan diehard, you’re going to love certain aspects of this book.
By all means, give this book a try. The pace is a bit slow at first, but if you just want to cozy up to a nice romantic fantasy with some of the more basic, old school elements in romance, you’ll enjoy it. And check out Shay’s backlist! She’s the queen of the male POV and I will read anything this woman puts out.
