Wil’s Favorite Books of 2016

Posted December 29, 2016 by Wil in 2016 Favorites / 0 Comments

I read over 150 Books in 2016, so picking my favorite books was so so hard because I read some amazing books this year. I read all sorts of books in 2016, so I tried to put them into various categories as I picked my Top Favorites. I also have some amazing books that I gave 5 stars to that are not on this list, not because they’re not amazing, but because I was asked to choose my very top picks and we didn’t want to have super extensive lists 🙁  I still recommend you go through our reviews and check out some other awesome books! I also have to say, these are my favorite books I read in 2016, some of them were not released in 2016 though. So, without further ado, my favorite books of 2016:

Top Favorite Book of 2016:

From Sand and Ash by Amy Harmon

There are no words to describe how much I loved this book, this is hands down, and without a doubt my top book of the year. But 5 Stars are just not enough, this one I could easily rate 10 stars! This is not only an epic historical fiction masterpiece but also an EPIC Love Story. It’s beautiful, sad, heartbreaking, forbidden, hopeful, such a rollercoaster of emotions!  I read it and I also listened to the audiobook. Both are fantastic. This book will for sure has become one of my favorite books of all time and it will stay with me forever. Amy Harmon is such a master storyteller and definitely a one-click author for me.

My review: *I read this one recently with Angie and Perry and due to the holidays, we haven’t been able to post a full review on the blog the way the book deserves, we will very soon BUT take my word for it and just GET IT!

Favorite Romantic Comedy

Royally Screwed by Emma Chase

I loved this book, hard! This book was absolutely, royally, fantastic and definitely one of those where I loved every single thing about them and couldn’t put it down, not until I was done! It was also so funny and so so hot. This is one prince you have to meet. Handsome prince, feisty heroine, strong secondary characters, this book has it all. And well, there’s that whole fairytale aspect every girl dreams about. This one is a must read and my favorite romantic comedy of the year!

Favorite Sports Romance

Moonshot by Alessandra Torre

I read tons of sports romances this year, but this is my Top Pick! This book just blew me away! It’s like everything I love combined into one awesome book! This is a sports romance, a second chance romance and a forbidden romance all in one. There’s also a murder mystery going on that will keep you guessing right until the very end. Oh, and baseball! And the Yankees! So yes, this was a gift from the heavens for me since you know I’m a huge sports nerd and a sucker for second chance romances. This will forever be the Boom! book for Quinn and I, lol! I truly loved this one and as with every book of Alessandra I’ve read, I absolutely recommend.

Favorite Rock Star Romance

Tracing Holland by Alyson Santos

I loved everything about this book, no ifs, not buts, I LOVED EVERYTHING. This was just simply beautiful and plain amazing and one of my top reads of 2016.  I do have to say that this is Book 2, you need to read Book 1, you need to read Night Shifts Black, there’s no way around it, this isn’t even a “could be read as a standalone” it’s not, the events of NSB are not recapped here, the story just continues. So, if you haven’t read NSB, do me a favor and pick up NSB before you read my review of Tracing Holland, you WILL NOT be disappointed

Favorite “Book Every Woman Needs to Read”

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

The sisters and I read this one together and it was an amazing experience. It’s one of those books that after I finished I just couldn’t think about it. This was so powerful, like the category says, this is THE book every woman should read. This book has a theme about “naked truths”, when is naked truth time, you have to be brutally honest. My naked truth is that even though I love Colleen Hoover, I have not loved every Colleen Hoover I’ve read. However, there is no denying that even though I haven’t loved some of her previous books (well, mostly Ugly Love), her writing is incredible, and no two of her books are the same. With each book, she surprises me more and more. Her popularity is not due to overhype, she’s truly the real deal. So what is It Ends With Us about? I wish I could tell you, but I can’t. And trust me you would thank me for it later. This is truly one of those books you have to go in blind in order to truly appreciate the development of the story and all of the twist and turns. I feel like everything I say about it could spoil your reading experience and I do not want that. This is definitely a top 2016 read for me and you will not be disappointed with this one!

Favorite Young Adult Book

The Hard Count by Ginger Scott

I’m in love with this book, period. This was my first Ginger Scott book and I have become a huge fan ever since. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to everyone and anyone. This was such a great read for me. As a sports nerd and a huge football fan, this book was everything I expected it to be and then some. This book reminded me why I love YA so much and why I should read YA more often. The High School experiences, the anticipation, that first touch, the first kiss, the first love, this book had all of that, and I enjoyed every second of it.

Favorite Book(s) by a New to Me Author

Ok, I totally cheated with this category and picked 2 books, lol. I also should’ve named this category “Emma Scott gets her own category cause she’s amazing”. This year I discovered the awesomeness that is Emma Scott and my obsession with her gorgeous books began!

Full Tilt by Emma Scott

OMG this book! There was an lot of buzz about this book before it came out so the day it came out I just had to have it. Once I started, I just couldn’t stop, so I didn’t stop. I just read it…all day. And my God is this book gorgeous! I have to admit that I cheated and read a review that had spoilers. For me, that definitely intrigued me to give the book a chance even faster. But to be honest, it’s probably better to be blind. Trust me, this one is a masterpiece and also a tearjerker. I absolutely recommend, even if it might break your heart.

Rush by Emma Scott

This was gorgeous, beautiful, perfect. Emma Scott is so freaking talented, she writes the most amazing books! This was perfection! I hate to compare books but think as this one as the better, more optimistic version of Me Before You. I’ve reread this since August and I still think about this one from time to time. I call it the Emma Scott effect!

Favorite Full Series Released in 2016

The Retrieval Duet by Aly Martinez

Aly Martinez never ceases to amaze me with her wonderful, beautiful writing. Last year, she wrote one of my favorite books, The Fall Up, and this year, she has outdone herself with the Retrieval duet. The books are simply amazing. Once I started reading them, I simply could not put it down. Everything about both books blew me away, the writing, the story, the characters, the suspense…this duet is a beautifully written roller coaster ride. I had a hangover for weeks!

This is definitely one of those books where if you say too much, you might spoil this amazing reading experience for someone else, and I definitely don’t want that. Both books are very cleverly written, like the blurb says, this is one story, two couples, so there are multiple POVs. Book 1 does focus on one of the 2 main couples, while the other is very present, and Book 2 is focused on the other couple, while the couple from book 1 will also be very present. Like I said before, this was my favorite full series released in 2016, and I absolutely recommend.

Favorite Second Chance Romance

Steadfast by Sarina Bowen

I’m definitely a Sarina fan, and so far pretty much every Sarina book I’ve read has been amazing. She’s such a smart writer; her books are so real and also well balanced. They are usually the perfect combination of passion, angst and even humor. Better yet, she can achieve all that without having over the top drama or stupid misunderstandings in her books. And those are the kind of books I love. The kind of books that speak to me, and the kind of books I usually crave. And well, this is also a second chance romance, and if you follow my reviews, you know that second chance romances are my weakness!  But this book, this book is so much more. This is a redemption story of the best kind. A book about accepting your mistakes, growing up in every sense of the word and moving forward with life. A second chance, not only at love, but at life in general. Like I said, it’s just…brilliant!

Favorite First Love/Friends-to-Lovers Book

The Fire Between Hi and Lo by Brittainy C. Cherry

There are no words to describe how much I loved this book. This is easily one of my favorite books this year. I loved everything, the story, the writing, the characters, every single thing. Brittainy Cherry is so talented, her writing is gorgeous and her characters are always so raw and real, it is impossible not to have all the feels while reading this book. I loved the main characters, I also loved all of the secondary characters. Overall, this book is happy and sad, amazing and heartbreaking, raw and real. But above all this book is full of hope. Hope that people can change, hope that loves conquers all and hope that there will be better days in the future. And the epilogue is simply perfection. Needless to say, I wholeheartedly recommend this book, it brings all the feels and the writing is gorgeous. You won’t be disappointed!

Favorite Dark Romance

Corrupt by Penelope Douglas

Ahhh Corrupt! This book, I tell you, it’s such an amazing mind trip. I can’t explain how much I loved this book because there is none. I was hooked since the first word. This was dark, twisty and all sorts of hot! And a lot of HOLY SHIT, WTF, and What Did I just read moments? And that Epilogue. F-ing Perfection. While I was reading this one, I was giving live updates to the wives and Shannon and Angie were there to hold my hand along the way. This is an absolute favorite of the Sisterhood and a definite must-read!

Favorite Forbidden Romance

Dark Notes by Pam Goodwin

This one was all sorts of messed up and all sorts of A-MA-ZING. It has probably become one of my all-time favorite student/teacher romances. But this forbidden student/teacher romance it’s so much more than that. It’s a great, erotic tale of sexual awakening. And it also deals with healing from many painful issues of the past such as sexual abuse. It’s definitely not for everyone as it has some major triggers. In short, I was super fascinated and hooked with this one. Pam Godwin is definitely a great choice if you’re looking for something hot and dark!

Favorite M/M

The Spiral Down by Aly Martinez

I love me some really good MM, and this one is my favorite this year! I loved everything about this book, everything. I know that says nothing about the actual book, but this book just made me so happy and everything about it felt so right. The Spiral Down is the second book of Aly Martinez read. The first one was The Fall Up. The Spiral Down, although a standalone is a spinoff of The Fall Up (TFU). Although reading TFU is not required, I strongly urge you to read it. Not only is TFU an amazing book, (my review can be read here on the blog), you also get to meet Henry and it definitely helps you understand him better in The Spiral Down. I read this in one seating, totally devoured it, it pulled me out of all sorts of book funks and left me with a huge hangover!

Favorite “What did I just read?” Book

Midnight Lily by Mia Sheridan

This one blew me away, plain and simple. This book is also impossible to review. If I tell you what the book is about, you will be spoiled. If I say too much, you will be spoiled. If you skip parts, you will be spoiled. If you read some of the reviews out there, you will be spoiled. And if you are spoiled you won’t enjoy the book as much. This is the ultimate “go in blind” and expect the unexpected book. This is definitely not your typical Mia Sheridan book and it’s a departure from the other books in the series. Once I got into it, I couldn’t put it down. I was hooked. I needed to know how this would end. Now, I’m usually pretty good at figuring out where the story is going, so hardly anything surprises me. Well, this one did, it totally did. My mind was blown. I still can’t stop thinking about it, cause wow. In a sea of predictable and more of the same books, this one happened to surprise me. Not to mention, Mia Sheridan is such a talented writer and her writing is simply beautiful.

Favorite Tear-Jerker/Why Is Life So Unfair Book

Steady as the Snow Falls by Lindy Zart

I read this one and still think about it from time to time. I think these characters will stay with me forever. This book is simply beautiful, gorgeous even. This is my first Lindy Zart book but it won’t be my last.  I have to admit that I was a little hesitant because I’m normally too sarcastic and Miss Zart has a reputation for writing tear jerkers so I normally try to stay away, but this was so worth it. I read this completely blind. I had a vague idea of the blurb but I didn’t read anything else about it or any other reviews. I didn’t want to be spoiled and this is exactly how I recommend you go in. The category the book is in it as my favorite is pretty self-explanatory so you’ve been warned!
