Tyler Westbrook, better known as Johnny Depth, is taking the adult film industry by storm. With his playboy looks, it’s no surprise a few coworkers have attempted to take things off set and into the bedroom, but Tyler refuses to blur the lines between work and play…until the new assistant to the director walks in.
Jemma Morgan was recently fired from a lead role on a kid’s TV show that was supposed to be her big break. Unable to get another acting gig, she's accepted a job in an industry she never expected to be a part of. Although she anticipates being shocked her first few days on set, nothing could prepare her for the moment she's asked to hold the reflector as her ex-boyfriend plows through a woman like a Kansas cornfield.
In a world of lube and fake moans, is there a place for a second chance? Exes and some serious ohs…the term ex-rated just took on a whole new meaning.

“Your ex is a porn star? Only you, Jemma, only you!”
“Oh, God, I thought I was going to die. What are the chances of that, really? I mean, can we look up the statistics for that because I am pretty damn sure it’s more likely that I would find fucking Bigfoot while riding on the back of the goddamn Loch Ness monster.”

Going into EXRATED, yes you know the synopsis but I still don’t think I was prepared to really jump in with both feet. At first I thought I might almost be a little prudish, but then everything just turned hilarious and I couldn’t stop snickering, so safe to say I got over that quite quickly. Maybe it’s just because I wasn’t expecting it to start quite like that, I’m not sure, but it works. At times it’s ridiculous, at times you’re reading and shaking your head back and forth because you can’t believe what’s on the page, but when it’s chalked up to the entertainment value? This is a 10/10. It’s an engaging and dynamic read that is so out of the ordinary, it’s in a category all of its own. Fresh and creative, EXRATED is something fans of the romantic comedy and erotica genres will definitely enjoy.

“As fucking amazing as it sounds when you tell random strangers you’re a porn star, it doesn’t sound so great when you’re telling it to a girl you thought you were going to marry.”

Even early on when these two are fighting, there are some oddly strange moments. Not oddly weird, but just a bit unexpected. These moments are well placed, extremely well thought out and help the character development and growth tremendously.

“This is how it’s supposed to be with us.” He cups the back of my head in his hand. “Push and pull. You know that, titch.”
His fingers twist in my hair as he inches his face toward mine. “I pull….” His mouth is right in front of mine. I can feel their warmth. “You push,” he says, his lips so close to my mouth I can taste his words.

Tyler was not only fun and blunt, but of course sexy as hell. Mr. Johnny Depth seems like good people. Plus his little displays of alphaness were exceptional. But then his actions to try to protect Jemma? Some were hilarious, some heartfelt, but all showing one thing – how much he truly cared for her.

The mattress dips when he crawls in next to me.
“What are you doing, Tyler?”
He drags in a heavy breath and then I feel his hand caresses the side of my face. “Pretending my life’s the way it should be,” he says before kissing me.

Jemma was feisty and I really liked that she spoke her mind. Yes she had some trials and tribulations that got her to the point of assisting in the porn industry, but she never took life too seriously. With the help of her best friend Heather – making fun of her life and perhaps a little tequila – she learned to make the best out of the hand she was currently playing. I can admire this in a person.

“Tyler,” she exhales. “People grow up. They drift apart.”
“People do. We shouldn’t have though.”

I know I’ve already mentioned it once or twice, but seriously, when I say this is funny – believe me! Laugh out loud, chuckling, I think I even snorted a few times. Poor Jemma, her life turns into a soap opera real quick and there’s absolutely nothing she can do to stop fate’s joke. At least with the help of Heather, they had a fairly positive outlook on all of these events. For the most part anyways! *snickers*

I glare at her. “I hate you right now.”
She steps close to me and glares. “You smell like a guy.”
“I rode home with him. In a cab.”
“Road head?”
“What the—no. I did not give him road head in the back of a fucking cab so the grungy looking cabbie can jerk one off while driving down the road.”
She laughs. “That would make a good porn. Suggest that to your boss and see if you can get a royalty cut.”

Of course based on the synopsis I was expecting this book to be funny, and yes I realized it was going to be over the top. I mean really, it’s about the porn industry, how could it not be? But I wasn’t expecting the feels too! But boy was I pleasantly surprised.

“I’ve loved you since I was six, and I’ll love you until I’m ninety-six, even if you aren’t really mine.”

The emotion was quite organic and you can see based on the past these two had, how much they really cared for each other. Even despite what their hearts want, life, careers, morals and friends all get in the way. What are you willing to sacrifice to have the one person who has always been the centre of your attention? This isn’t always an easy topic to divulge but I was quite please with the portrayal and in turn, the results.

The writing throughout this novel flows quite well but I did notice there are times that the word selection could be a little more diverse. The same phrasing was used over and over, the same idioms, same adjectives. It doesn’t hurt to change things up a little bit and it could ultimately make the writing style that much stronger. Overall it was good, not exceptional but definitely enjoyable. I have a lot more quotes and passages highlighted than I would’ve imagined in the beginning, with some of them really hitting home.

“Stay,” he says in a sleepy voice. “Just stay a little bit longer.”
Fighting against the emotions tearing me up on the inside, I relax and give into him. I close my eyes and fall back asleep in the arms of the boy who will always be my entire world, even if he can never really be mine.

Being my first novel by this author, I quite enjoyed it! I very rarely reread books, but this is one I don’t think I’d ever have a problem rereading. It’s short, so that’s a bonus, but it was so much fun that you can help but laugh out loud. I have been warned though most of her other novels aren’t like this and are heavy, angsty, etc., but it just so happens that I like angst and use funny stories to break it all up, so I’ll definitely be checking some of those out!

This is too much for me to experience alone. I grab my phone from my purse and text Heather.
So, today’s feature is guy on guy.
OMG. You are watching this. Right now?
Yep. Dick in asshole. Balls a swinging.
