I wanted to jump.
He made me fall.
As a celebrity, I lived in the public eye, but somewhere along the way, I’d lost myself in the spotlight.
Until he found me.
Sam Rivers was a gorgeous, tattooed stranger who saved my life with nothing more than a simple conversation.
But we were both standing on that bridge for a reason the night we met. The secrets of our pasts brought us together—and then tore us apart.
Could we find a reason to hold on as life constantly pulled us down?
Or maybe there’s only one direction to go when two people fall in love at rock bottom—up.
“Once upon a time…I fell in love with Spiderman. #TrueStory”
I seriously loved this book. Everything about it was so perfect, the story, the romance, the humor and the serious subjects. You know a book is great when you can’t stop highlighting quotes from it. This is my first Aly Martinez book but it definitely won’t be my last.
I will try to be as vague as I can without spoiling too much of the story because this is one of those books that you have to experience yourself in order to fully enjoy it. This book consumed me from the first page and I couldn’t stop reading until I was done.
“It was raining. Isn’t that the way all great love stories start? And also usually end”
The book is an epic love story between two people that find love in the most unlikely of places, the edge of a bridge. She is seriously contemplating ending her life, he goes there in a way to redeem his past. She is a huge celebrity, a pop princess seriously overwhelmed by all life has thrown at her. He is a gorgeous, tattooed furniture maker haunted by the ghosts of his past. They both have issues to overcome, but they are both such amazing people. They immediately share a strong bond, even when they really didn’t know each other.
I knew the girl on the bridge, and everyone knew Levee Williams. But I needed her to get to know Sam Rivers…fast. Palming each side of her face, I dropped my forehead to hers. “I’m about to make things awkward. It’s kinda what I do. Just bear with me.” She licked her lips, and I was forced to kiss her again. When I finally came back up for air, I continued. “My name is Samuel Nathan Rivers. I’m twenty-seven. Aquarius. No criminal history. I have a clean bill of health. I’m a democrat, but for God’s sake, do not tell my mom. I own a furniture shop and clear six figures a year. I’m not interested in your money. I’ll show you my tax return if need be. I’m also not a super-fan interested in your fame. But, for the love of all that’s holy, I need you, Designer Shoes, to come home with me.”
They fall for each other hard and fast, but it never feels forced, it’s beautifully executed by the author.
It’d only been a week and we’d only spent one night together, but, God, she’d felt like the great I’d always been searching for. He wasn’t a magical fix. I knew that the free fall was still waiting for me at the end of the night. But I didn’t feel like I was plummeting when I was with him.
Their ride is definitely not easy as both have issues to overcome. But they also stick together and fight like hell for their relationship and to get happier and healthier. The book definitely deals with heavy subjects like suicide, depression, mental illness and addictions in general.
Slowly, it became obvious that Sam and I did in fact come from different worlds. But it also became blindingly obvious that that was exactly why I needed to hold on to him.
“I fell in love with you when I was at rock bottom. But I’ll never be able to look back on those dark days with anything but a smile. I wanted to jump, Sam, but I never once expected the fall to go up.”
I loved both of these main characters so much. Levee was such a strong girl despite everything she was going through. And Sam was just beautiful, he was perfect, everything I loved about heroes Sam definitely has. Not to mention tattoos and piercings in interesting places… The conversations between them were always awesome and their banter is some of the best I’ve read between MCs.
“That’s not fair. You can’t use my words against me.”
“I’m not using them against you.” I grabbed both sides of his face and tipped his lips to mine.
“I repurposed them.”
I also loved the secondary characters, especially Henry and Jason. Henry totally deserves his own epic book!!! Like I said, this is one of those books you have to experience for yourself, but it is so beautiful. Trust me, you will love it, it will leave you with the biggest grin in the world! Definitely one of my favorite books this year. Loved, loved, loved it!!!
She wasn’t the princess.
And I wasn’t the pauper.
She was just a sad girl who liked to write songs.
And I was nothing more than a simple guy who was lucky enough to have made her fall in love with him.
